Branches of Biology

There are different branches of biology depending on the life of living organism and their inter-relationships.

Botany: The branch of biology that studies the life of plants, their growth, development, metabolism, reproduction, diseases, chemical and physical properties are called as Botany.

Zoology: The branch of biology that studies the life of animals including human being, their growth, development, metabolism, reproduction, diseases, chemical and physical properties are called as Zoology

Botany and Zoology are further studied individually by its morphological, physiological and embryological characters.

Morphology includes

  • External characters
  • Anatomy – internal organs of body
  • Histology – studies of tissues and their organism
  • Cytology – studies of cell structure and function.

Physiology includes various function performed by living organism like metabolism, digestion, respiration, excretion, photosynthesis etc.

Embryology includes the study of embryo development.

Microbiology: The branch of biology that studies the life of organism after the invention and development of microscope.

Ecology: The branch of biology that studies the inter-relation ships of plants and animals and their connection with environment.

Genetics: The branch of biology that studies the structure of gene and their functions in the body. It gives the information about hereditary characters of living organism.

Biotechnology: It is a new branch of biology that studies the use of micro-organism, plant cells and animal cells for development of new and valuable products used in various harmful diseases.

Molecular biology: The branch of biology that studies the biological processes at molecular level.

Taxonomy: It is a branch of biology based on the classification of living organism. Taxa or taxon is a group of organism formed by their similarities and differences.

Biochemistry: It is correlated with chemistry and mainly studies the life at chemistry level with the help of knowledge of amino acids, proteins and carbohydrates.

Space-biology: The study of life of living organism in space and effects of out environment on them.

Pharmacy: It is a branch of biology that identifies the drugs and their effects and helps in preparation of new medicines to counter the diseases.

Biostatistics: It is an interdisciplinary study of biology in correlation with statistic.

Biophysics: It is an interdisciplinary study of biology in correlation with theory of physics.

Bioinformatics: It is a new branch of biology that deals with the computer to manage biological data.
