Bicarbonate

Bicarbonate is the second largest anion present in extra-cellular fluid and acts as a buffer in regulating acid base balance in the body. A normal serum bicarbonate concentration is 22-30 mmol/L.

A lack of bicarbonate causes the blood pH < 7.25 and called as metabolic acidosis and an excess causes metabolic alkalosis.
