Calcium
Calcium is another cation present mainly in bones and in extra cellular fluid. The main dietary sources of calcium are milk, cheese, green vegetables, eggs and fish.
The main functions of calcium are
Functioning of nerves and muscles
For hardening of bones along with phosphorous and vitamin D
For coagulation of blood
In impulse propagation
In muscle contraction
Calcium level in plasma is regulated by parathyroid hormone and calcitonin and is excreted in sweat, urine and feces. Daily requirement of calcium is high in children and during pregnancy and lactation.
Normal calcium content in body is 22 gm per kg body weight
Normal intake of calcium per day in adult is 800-1000mg
Daily requirement of calcium in body is 0.8 gm
The normal calcium plasma level is 2.2-2.6 m mol/lit
