How to determine the focus and directrix for a parabola

Find the focus, directrix for y2 = -2x  and finally sketch it out.

Solution:   From the given equation of the parabola, we have x = - y2/2.

The minus sign over here flips the parabola to the left and we have . 

Therefore, focus and directrix are (-1/2, 0) and x = 1/2.
